*3. HIGHLIGHT FROM CLASS (10 POINTS)*

Write 6 or more sentences about what you learned from the discussions in Breakout Room 1 and Breakout Room 2. Organize your answer into two sections (one for each breakout room).

Answer:

Breakout Room 1

During our breakout room discussion, we learned that teachers should keep teacher talking time to a minimum and present lessons in a simple, clear, and straightforward manner. This approach makes it easier for students to understand the lesson and encourages them to participate actively. We also practiced teaching a grammar tense by giving short, clear explanations while keeping learners engaged throughout the activity.

Breakout Room 2

In our second breakout room, we discussed The Chosen and the impact of absent parents on children. We reflected on how the Holy Spirit came upon the believers at Pentecost, enabling them to speak in different languages and boldly proclaim the gospel. From Genesis 41, I learned that God's timing is perfect and that, like Joseph, we should remain faithful and patient while waiting for His plans to unfold.

We also discussed how the absence of either a mother or a father can affect a child's development in different ways, while acknowledging that both situations can result in lasting emotional challenges.

*6. BIBLE QUESTIONS (10 POINTS)*

IMPORTANT: Make sure your answer is 3 sentences or more:

A. IN Acts 3:19 we see something very important. We see how important it is for someone to repent of their sin. Why do you think this is important in a relationship with Jesus?

Answer:

I believe repentance is an important part of our relationship with Jesus because it  turning away from sin and choosing to follow Him. It allows us to receive God's forgiveness, grow spiritually, and stay close to Him.

B. In Acts 4:12 the Bible states that there is salvation in no one else. In what other leaders or religions do people think there is salvation?

Answer:

People look for salvation in different religions, spiritual leaders, or by relying on good works and personal success. However, Acts 4:12 teaches that Christians believe salvation is found only through Jesus Christ.

C. We have to be very careful of any religions or people that CHANGE or ADD to the Bible as it was originally written. Why is it VERY dangerous to CHANGE or ADD to the Bible?

Answer:

Changing or adding to the Bible can mislead people and distort God's truth. Christians believe the Bible should be followed as it was originally given.

D. There are many translations of the Bible. What is the difference between a translation of the Bible and another religion that adds or changes the Bible?

Answer:

A Bible translation presents the same message in another language to make it easier to understand without changing its meaning. In contrast, adding to or changing the Bible introduces teachings that were not part of the original Scriptures. Christians believe faithful translations preserve God's message, while alterations do not.

*7. TRAUMA INFORMED TEACHER (20 POINTS)*

Remind yourself of the ways that parents can wound their children:

1. The Absent Parent:

The absent parent can be absent physically or emotionally.

2. The Addicted Parent:

The addicted parent can be addicted to work, drugs, pleasure, or something else.

3. The Angry Parent:

The angry parent has no control over their temper. The child is always in trouble.

4. The Abusive Parent:

The abusive parent could be physically, sexually, verbally, or emotionally abusive.

5. The Belittling Parent:

The belittling parent puts down the child through words and body language.

6. The Controlling Parent:

The controlling parent is constantly watching and controlling the child.

7. The Manipulative Parent:

The manipulative parent uses manipulation to control the child.

A. PRIVATE JOURNAL: Write 1 paragraphs about any experiences that you have had with addiction in your life or the lives of those around you. Think about the impact that addiction has had on you or people you know. Don’t post your answer to this question. Leave a comment confirming that you have completed this assignment.

Answer:

I have completed this assignment

B. Let’s talk more about the ADDICTED Parent. The addicted parent is addicted to work, drugs, pleasure, or something else. What are some things that could be addictive other than those listed above? List 5.

Answer:

When I thought about addiction, I realized it isn't limited to drugs or alcohol. Other things can also become unhealthy when they take over a person's life.

- Gambling: Can lead to financial problems and affect family relationships.

- Social media: Too much time online can reduce quality time with family.

- Video games: Can become harmful if they replace parenting responsibilities.

- Compulsive shopping: May cause financial stress and conflict at home.

- Excessive internet use: Can make a parent emotionally unavailable to their children.

These examples show that addiction is about losing balance and control, which can negatively affect both parents and their children.

C. Spend 10 minutes researching and reading statistics related to addiction. Look at statistics in your area, and worldwide. Share 3 statistics or facts that you learned about addiction with the group.

Answer:

  • Nigeria’s Local Prevalence: According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the National Bureau of Statistics, the past-year prevalence of drug use in Nigeria is estimated at 14.4% of the adult population. This rate is significantly higher than the global average. [1, 2, 3]
  • Historic Global Highs: Worldwide, 316 million people used drugs (other than alcohol or tobacco) in 2023, representing about 6% of the global population aged 15 to 64. This is a sharp increase from 246 million in 2013, with cocaine and synthetics being the fastest-growing markets. [1, 2]
  • Disproportionate Treatment for Women: The UNODC World Drug Report highlights that globally, while 1 in 4 drug users is a woman, only 1 in 5 people who receive formal addiction treatment is a woman. [1]

D. Addiction changes the behavior of a person who is struggling with it. Addiction in a parent deeply affects the development of the child(ren) in the home. An addicted parent may have emotional changes (aggression, depression, or suicidal tendencies), or they could become forgetful and neglect necessary activities. Children in the home lack support because the addicted parent is unable to meet their needs. What are some other ways that addiction could impact parenting? List 5 in your answer.

Answer:

Addiction does more than affect the parent—it changes the entire family. Children are often the ones who suffer the most. Here are five ways addiction can impact parenting:

1. Parents may become unreliable, breaking promises and failing to meet their children's everyday needs.

2. Children may live with constant fear or anxiety because they never know what mood their parent will be in.

3. Communication often breaks down, leading to more arguments, misunderstandings, and emotional distance.

4. Money that should be used for food, school, or healthcare may be spent on the addiction, creating financial hardship.

5. Many children are forced to grow up too quickly, taking on adult responsibilities like caring for siblings or managing household chores.

These effects can leave lasting emotional scars and make it difficult for children to feel safe, loved, and supported.

E. If a pregnant mother is addicted to substances such as drugs or alcohol, the direct impact on the development of the baby is severe. Even one serving of alcohol in the mother’s system can have a drastic effect on the health of the child. Babies born to addicted mothers can also have enough of the substance in their system that they themselves are addicted from birth and suffer the effects of drug withdrawal as soon as they are born. Research Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (the technical term for babies born with a substance addiction). What are some short-term and long-term effects that this has on the child? Write a paragraph sharing some of these effects.

Answer:

Reading about Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) helped me understand that a mother's addiction can affect her baby even before birth. Babies born with NAS often go through withdrawal after delivery and may cry excessively, shake, have difficulty feeding, struggle to sleep, or even experience breathing problems and seizures. Some require close medical care for several weeks. As they grow older, they may face challenges such as learning delays, attention difficulties, behavioral problems, or trouble managing their emotions. Although every child is different and not all will experience the same effects, NAS can have a lasting impact on a child's development and highlights the importance of early care and support.

F. Alcohol is one of the most common substances to be abused during pregnancy. Research Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and the effects that it has on children from birth to adulthood. Write a paragraph sharing some of the information that you found about this disorder.

Answer:

Researching Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) helped me understand that alcohol use during pregnancy can cause lifelong physical, learning, and behavioral challenges for a child. It reminded me that even small choices during pregnancy can have lasting effects, which is why avoiding alcohol completely is the safest option.

G. Research the effects of substance abuse on the development of a baby. How does substance abuse impact the child’s development physically, mentally, and cognitively? Write a paragraph sharing your findings.

Answer:

After reading about the effects of substance abuse during pregnancy, I was surprised by how many areas of a child's development can be affected. I learned that the impact goes beyond birth, with some children experiencing low birth weight, developmental delays, attention difficulties, and emotional or learning challenges as they grow. One thing that stood out to me is that these effects can last for years, which shows how important early medical care and ongoing support are in helping children reach their full potential.

Answer:

This scene showed me that Jesus is compassionate, faithful, and able to provide, even when things seem impossible. He really is the impossibility specialist.

C. Which Bible passage is this scene based on? (If you know it.)

Answer:

This scene is based on the feeding of the 5,000, which is recorded in all four Gospels: Matthew  14:13–21, Mark 6:30–44, Luke 9:10–17, and John  6:1–14.
